A camel rider in the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria or Tadmor as the Syrian population calls it (2011). Just one year after this picture was taken the country almost fell apart in a bloody civil war. The city of Palmyra was capture by the terrorist group of the Islamic state, which destroyed a lot of the historical buildings and site, some of them dating back 7.000 year before Christ. With two oasis the location was an important crossroads for trade and saw many empires like Romans, Greeks, Persians or Ottomans coming and going. Latest the Islamic State was defeated – by Russian troops.
